It was a hot day at Saturday's Art in the Market at the Flint Farmer's Market. P*JET * IMAGES was invited to participate at their Kids Day Event, and P*JET gladly obliged.
GISD was onhand to train the kids how to chop vegetables, allowing them to keep whatever they cut. There was a face-painting table across from GISD, along with three authors, including P*JET, a bounce-house, and an electric car racing track.
Pamela Tilden was scheduled to read one of her children's poetry books to a group of children at 11:30am.
Three children showed up to hear the reading of Meet Penny.
The Flint Farmer's Market allowed P*JET * IMAGES free use of their tent space for the Kid's Event, allowing us to stay past 2pm, when the event officially shut down.
P*JET * IMAGES received free exposure to three children, and a was onhand when the small crowds of kids did appear for the event.
We passed out several cards to passers-by and sold three sets of children's poetry books and two adventure novels to a relative and one children's poetry book to a non-related customer.
The event organizer was not available during the story-telling portion of the day. The authors had to personally shoe children over in order to have an audience.
The event took place during the same weekend as a Flint Festival, called Back to the Bricks, where classic cars paraded up and down the downtown area. Most of the vendors did not do very well due to the overall lack of participation.
Overall this experience has taught us to ask more questions about future events. I was pleased to make the sales that we made, but disappointed that when our time came to read our books, the organizer was not available to announce the event. We did make back all of our booth fees from the previous three shows with several dollars to spare, so it wasn't a total loss. We'll just file it under 'Lessons Learned'.
