Elements in an Exciting Story 2!

Characters are an essential part of any story. There are several different types of classic character types:

  • The hero, who saves the day
  • The villian, who causes some kind of dilemma
  • Minions, who do the villian's bidding
  • Sidekicks, who help the hero
  • Extras, who are revealed in passing

The Epic of Cougran contains a villian, who, unlike most stories, is the main character. He is not fighting a hero, for in society, one person rarely emerges as a hero, or savior if you will. I wanted to write an adventure story closer to reality in concept, and have it adhere to fantasy in execution. The reality that exists is that often there is a villian that emerges (Stalin, Hitler, Castro, George W. Bush) depending on your perspective. But no real hero stands out against these adversaries. Sure, they have their opponents, but it's never a one on one battle like the fairy tales that we all love. More often than not, it's a society or group that is fighting the adversary, and that is what I'm depicting, a single individual trying to take down an entire society.

Denzcan acquires supernatural powers from a meteorite that has crashlanded in the southern part of Raoolia. Denzcan, who was kidnapped by a crime syndicate as a child as a feeble attempt to create an army of Tigrens, escaped the clutches of this crime syndicate, and was never heard from again. Over time, he blames the entire society for his problems, and when he gets the means to destroy them, he sets out to do so by creating a virus that turns anyone bitten into a loyal Minotaur soldier. These soldiers have only one purpose, to carry out Denzcan's subliminal commands to the letter, and they do so, without remorse or thought of consequence.

Several hero types emerge along the way to try and stop Denzcan and his army, just like in real life, but the real adversary is the society. Obviously you can't generalize and say society is fighting back, so I introduce various characters that represent that society along the way to give hope to the readers.
